SpaceX Satellite Launches:
- On January 3, the SpaceX Ovzon 3 mission launched the Ovzon 3 satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit via a Falcon 9 rocket. This satellite, the first of its kind developed and funded privately in Sweden, is tailored to improve mobile broadband coverage in underserved areas, with the capability to cover one-third of the Earth. Weighing approximately 1,800 kg, Ovzon 3 will utilize its electric propulsion system to reach its geostationary orbit at 59.7 degrees east over 3-4 months.
- In a separate launch on January 2, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket deployed 21 Starlink satellites, including six with Direct to Cell capabilities. This innovation functions like a space-based cell tower, aiming to provide uninterrupted global communication services. The project involves global cellular providers such as T-Mobile in the U.S., Rogers in Canada, KDDI in Japan, Optus in Australia, One NZ in New Zealand, Salt in Switzerland, and Entel in Chile and Peru. This initiative represents a significant advancement in extending communication services to previously inaccessible areas.
- SpaceX's satellite network has grown to over 5,289 small satellites in low Earth orbit, focused on delivering broadband internet globally, particularly in areas with limited connectivity. With this expansive network, SpaceX has become the operator of the world's largest commercial satellite constellation, surpassing the total number of satellites deployed by any government or company. This achievement underscores SpaceX's leading role in advancing global telecommunications infrastructure.
Intel’s New AI Company:
- Intel recently announced the formation of a new independent company, Articul8 AI, Inc., in collaboration with DigitalBridge Group, Inc. This venture focuses on artificial intelligence software, with backing from the digital-focused asset manager and other investors. While the financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, Intel confirmed it would remain a shareholder in Articul8, which will operate with an independent board of directors.
- Articul8 AI, emerging from Intel's previous work with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on corporate AI technology, will offer a full-stack, vertically-optimized, and secure generative AI software platform. This platform is designed to keep customer data, training, and inference within the enterprise security perimeter, offering deployment options including cloud, on-premises, or hybrid models. The initiative leverages Intel's intellectual property and technology, ensuring strategic alignment between the two companies for market opportunities and GenAI adoption in enterprises.
- Arun Subramaniyan, formerly vice president and general manager in Intel’s Data Center and AI Group, will lead Articul8 as its CEO. His role underscores Intel's strategic direction in expanding its AI capabilities, particularly in areas demanding heightened data privacy and security. This new company marks a significant step in addressing market needs for secure, enterprise-level AI solutions.
