The breach, which was traced to a third-party partner, occurred on July 6, 2024, and was discovered by Gryphon on September 3, 2024. The incident exposed sensitive information, including names, birthdates, Social Security numbers, addresses, medical records, and health insurance details. Gryphon officially notified affected patients and disclosed the breach publicly on October 11, 2024.
Though no evidence has been found to indicate that the compromised data has been misused, Gryphon is offering 12 months of free identity theft protection services to those affected. This includes credit monitoring, insurance coverage, and identity recovery assistance, as a precautionary measure to safeguard personal information. Legal firms have begun investigating the situation, and class action lawsuits may be pursued on behalf of the victims.
The breach highlights the risks associated with supply-chain vulnerabilities, where a security flaw in a partner organization can lead to widespread exposure of sensitive data. Gryphon’s case underlines the need for stronger cybersecurity practices across healthcare networks to prevent unauthorized access and protect patient information.
