Statistic of the Day:
Small-scale solar systems generated an estimated 92,979 gigawatthours of electricity in the United States in 2025.
Small-scale solar means rooftop and other solar systems with less than 1 megawatt of capacity. A gigawatthour measures a large amount of electricity; the estimate covers generation from these smaller systems rather than utility-scale solar plants.
History of Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy system:
Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy system became a sustained wartime campaign in October 2022, turning electricity, heating and water services into recurring civilian vulnerabilities. Ukraine has responded by repairing damaged networks, expanding links to the European grid and seeking more dispersed power sources, but repeated strikes have kept supply fragile, especially in winter.
2017: Ukraine began a formal project to link its electricity system with Continental Europe in 2017, while most of its grid still operated in parallel with Russia and Belarus. The work set up an alternative source of technical support and electricity trade before the full-scale war.
February 24, 2022: Ukraine disconnected its power system from Russia and Belarus for a planned isolated-operation test on February 24, 2022, the day Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The timing left Ukraine needing to keep its grid stable during the opening phase of the war.
March 16, 2022: Grid operators synchronized Ukraine and Moldova with Continental Europe on March 16, 2022, after emergency requests from both countries. The connection gave Ukraine access to European electricity support and reduced the risk that isolation from the Russian and Belarusian grids would cause lasting blackouts.
October 2022–February 2023: Russian forces began deliberate large-scale strikes on electricity facilities across Ukraine in October 2022. From October 2022 through February 2023, at least 13 attack waves damaged generation and transmission equipment in 19 Ukrainian regions and Kyiv, Ukraine, causing power, heat and water outages during winter.
November 2023: Ukraine’s connection to Continental Europe became permanent in November 2023, and cross-border electricity-import capacity increased. The link gave Ukrainian utilities a way to cover some shortages when Russian attacks or damaged plants reduced domestic supply.
March 22–August 31, 2024: Russian forces launched nine large, coordinated attack waves against Ukraine’s power system between March 22 and August 31, 2024. Damage to generation, transmission and distribution facilities disrupted electricity, water, sanitation, heating, health care, schools and businesses across Ukraine.
December 2025–May 2026: Russian forces repeatedly struck electricity and heating facilities across Ukraine during the 2025–2026 winter. The United Nations documented emergency outages affecting millions of civilians, while damage to power plants deepened the country’s electricity shortage during cold weather.
