Singing River Health Data Breach:
- Singing River Health System (SRHS), a Mississippi-based healthcare provider, has begun notifying around 900,000 individuals that their personal data was compromised during a ransomware attack in August 2023. The breach, first detected on August 16, with ransomware deployed on August 19, involved unauthorized access to sensitive information including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and medical details.
- Despite no current evidence of misuse of the stolen data, SRHS has updated its initial report to the Maine Attorney General's Office from 252,890 affected individuals to 895,204, and has commenced sending notification letters since May 13, 2024. The organization is taking proactive steps by offering 12 months of free credit monitoring services and advising those impacted to monitor their accounts and credit for any signs of fraudulent activity.
- SRHS has reported the incident to law enforcement and is enhancing its cybersecurity measures, including implementing additional safeguards and conducting employee training to prevent future breaches. The healthcare provider emphasizes the importance of vigilance against identity theft and encourages individuals to report any suspicious activity related to this breach.
Google Cloud Error Deletes Pension Fund Data:
- Google recently announced a critical error in its cloud services that led to the complete deletion of UniSuper's account, an Australian pension fund with $135 billion in managed assets. On May 2, 2023, a configuration error during the provisioning of private cloud services at Google Cloud resulted in the loss of both the primary account and its backups, affecting nearly 647,000 members of UniSuper. The deletion impacted all data stored on Google Cloud, although UniSuper was able to restore its data using backups from another cloud provider by May 15.
- This incident was highlighted during a joint statement from UniSuper’s CEO, Peter Chun, and Google Cloud’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, describing the event as a unique mishap not previously experienced by any of Google Cloud’s global clients. They emphasized that this was an isolated incident caused by a specific sequence of events that led to the accidental deletion of the account and assured that measures have been taken to prevent a recurrence.
- The loss of data across multiple geographic locations pointed to a significant oversight in Google Cloud’s safety protocols, typically designed to prevent such widespread deletion. This event underscores the importance of maintaining diverse backup strategies, as UniSuper had fortunately implemented. Following the outage, Google and UniSuper focused on service restoration, ensuring all member services were operational and updating their crisis management and data security measures to better safeguard against future incidents.
