CentroMed Data Breach:

CentroMed, a healthcare provider based in San Antonio operating as El Centro Del Barrio, has announced that 400,000 of its current and former patients have had their personal and protected health information compromised due to a cyberattack. The breach was detected on May 1, 2024, following unauthorized access to their network on April 30, as stated in an incident notice on CentroMed's website.
In response to the breach, CentroMed advises all patients to carefully review their financial and health care statements for any discrepancies or unrecognized services and to report any suspicious activity. The accessed data included sensitive details such as names, addresses, dates of birth, medical and health information, insurance details, Social Security numbers, financial account information, and medical claims data. CentroMed has started notifying the affected individuals as of May 17 and has reported the incident to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
This breach marks the second major cyber incident for CentroMed within a year, the first involving the Karakurt extortion group in June 2023, which compromised the personal data of 350,000 patients and their associates but did not result in public data leakage. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), along with the FBI, the US Treasury, and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), had previously issued alerts about Karakurt's activities, noting their method of data exfiltration and ransom demands without deploying ransomware.
