- Yesterday, the FBI recently announced that North Korea was responsible for a $1.5 billion hack targeting the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit. According to investigators, the cyberattack was part of a larger effort by North Korean hackers to steal digital assets and convert them into other cryptocurrencies before laundering them into traditional currency. The FBI labeled the operation as TraderTraitor, highlighting the use of sophisticated tactics to bypass security measures and move the stolen funds across multiple blockchain addresses.
- Full statement link below:

- The hack occurred when Bybit transferred assets from its secure offline storage, known as a cold wallet, to a warm wallet used for daily transactions. During this process, hackers managed to exploit vulnerabilities in the system, altering smart contract logic to gain control of the funds. Around 401,000 Ethereum (ETH) was transferred to an unknown destination. Despite the breach, Bybit assured customers that their assets remain secure and fully backed. The company is working with blockchain analysts to track the stolen funds and has offered a reward for information leading to their recovery.

Geopolitics & Military Activity:

- Yesterday, February 26, 2025, the United States announced sanctions against six entities based in China and Hong Kong for their involvement in supplying key components for Iran’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and ballistic missile programs. These entities were found to have facilitated the procurement of materials and technology on behalf of Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) and its associated organizations, including the Aerospace Industries Organization and Iran Electronics Industries. The U.S. government stated that these organizations play a critical role in Iran’s military advancements, particularly in developing weapons that are used to support destabilizing activities in the region.

- The sanctions freeze any U.S.-based assets of these entities and prohibit American individuals or businesses from engaging in transactions with them. The move is part of ongoing efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring technology that could enhance its UAV and missile capabilities, which have been linked to regional conflicts and support for militant groups. The U.S. reiterated its commitment to using economic pressure to disrupt Iran’s military supply chains and warned that further actions could be taken against other facilitators aiding Iran’s weapons programs.

Environment & Weather:
- Over the past few days, South Africa has experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, causing widespread damage and disruption across multiple regions. In KwaZulu-Natal, at least nine people lost their lives, and infrastructure was severely impacted. A landslide in Adams Mission led to the collapse of two houses, burying several individuals. In Amanzimtoti, over 184 mm (7.2 inches) of rain fell within five hours, worsening the situation. Meanwhile, in Gauteng, a tornado struck north of Pretoria, uprooting trees, damaging homes, and forcing evacuations due to flooding.

- In Limpopo, flooding led to road closures and increased alerts as authorities urged residents to stay cautious. Emergency services and rescue teams were deployed to assist those affected, with officials closely monitoring the situation. Many schools and businesses have been temporarily closed, and the damage to homes and infrastructure continues to rise. Authorities are working to provide aid and support to communities dealing with the aftermath of the storms.

Space:
- Yesterday, February 26, 2025, SpaceX successfully launched two missions, starting with the Intuitive Machines IM-2 mission. This mission lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, carrying the Nova-C lunar lander, named “Athena,” to the Moon. The lander is set to land in the Mons Mouton region, about 100 miles from the Moon’s south pole, where it will conduct scientific research. Among its key payloads are NASA’s TRIDENT drill, which will search for water ice beneath the lunar surface, and the MSolo mass spectrometer, designed to analyze lunar soil for valuable resources.

- The mission also carries a laser reflector for navigation experiments and additional payloads from both public and private entities, aimed at advancing lunar technology and space exploration capabilities. These include experimental instruments for testing lunar surface operations, communication technologies, and other scientific studies that could support future Moon missions.

- Later the same day, SpaceX launched a Starlink mission, sending 21 Starlink v2-mini satellites into low Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. This mission is part of SpaceX’s ongoing effort to expand its Starlink internet network. Of the 21 satellites, 13 are Direct to Cell satellites, designed to provide satellite-based mobile connectivity, reducing dead zones worldwide. The remaining 8 satellites are standard v2-mini models, which will improve broadband internet coverage and capacity. The launch further enhances SpaceX’s satellite network, bringing more reliable connectivity to remote and underserved areas.
Science & Technology:
- Yesterday, Amazon introduced Alexa+, an upgraded version of its voice assistant that now uses generative AI to make conversations more natural and personalized. This version, set to launch next month in the U.S. on select Echo Show devices, will be available for $19.99 per month, though Prime members can access it for free. Alexa+ is designed to handle more complex tasks, such as ordering groceries, planning events, and even acting as a virtual security guard. Aided by AI models from Amazon and Anthropic, it can now understand emotions, hold more engaging conversations, and provide personalized recommendations.

- Beyond better conversations, Alexa+ offers improved smart home control, allowing users to easily manage connected devices and set up custom routines with voice commands. It also has memory capabilities, meaning it can remember past interactions and preferences to offer more relevant responses. With new AI models and custom-built hardware, Amazon is positioning Alexa+ as a more advanced assistant, making it more useful for everyday life and keeping up with the growing AI market.
