Japan's Moon Mission:
- Yesterday, Japan initiated a lunar mission with the launch of its H2-A rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center. Following India's recent moon landing, this marks another significant step in international lunar exploration. The H2-A rocket has two main objectives: deploying a new X-ray telescope and testing a precise moon lander named SLIM.
- SLIM's design aims for a highly accurate landing, targeting a region within 100 meters of its set location. The technology from this mission will contribute data to NASA's Artemis project, a plan to establish a continuous human presence on the moon. Recent setbacks in Japan's space endeavors make this launch especially crucial for the nation's space program.
Texas-Mexican Border:
- Yesterday, a U.S. federal judge instructed Texas to reposition its 1,000-foot-long segment of floating barriers situated in the Rio Grande. Judge David A. Ezra's preliminary injunction supports the Justice Department's perspective, which contended in July that Texas overstepped its bounds by deploying these barriers in an area under federal purview.
- Texas has until September 15 to shift the barriers closer to the U.S. riverbank, collaborating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This comes amidst heightened concerns related to the increasing number of unauthorized immigrants entering the U.S.
- Previously, a situation arose where the majority of the barrier buoys inadvertently drifted towards the Mexican side of the river. This prompted Mexican authorities to express their concerns, leading Texas officials to reposition these barriers nearer to the U.S. bank.
- Additionally, while Governor Abbott previously emphasized that Texas didn't seek approval for their Operation Lone Star initiative, which led to the installation of these barriers, Texas officials have indicated their strong intention to appeal the judge's decision.
Mexico's Abortion Decriminalization:
- Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Mexico ruled against state laws prohibiting abortion, declaring them unconstitutional. This decision aligns with recent changes in reproductive rights across Latin America, as seen in Argentina and Colombia.
- However, the full removal of abortion from the penal code requires further legislative action. Mexico's congressional chambers need to collaborate on a complementary law, and while the decision holds promise, the timeframe for complete decriminalization remains uncertain.
