Meta Platforms EU Subscriptions:
- Meta is gearing up to introduce paid subscriptions for Instagram and Facebook to its European Union users. About 98% of Meta's revenue comes from targeted ads. However, since the EU's introduction of a significant digital privacy regulation in 2018, ad targeting within the EU has become challenging for Meta.
- This complexity heightened after a recent EU court decision that necessitates user consent for targeted ads. To adapt, Meta is set to launch subscription options: $14/month for an ad-free Instagram experience and $17/month to access both Instagram and Facebook without ads.
BlackBerry's Cybersecurity Business:
- BlackBerry revealed plans to separate its Internet of Things (IoT) and cybersecurity business, aiming for a seperate initial public offering next year. This move aligns with other corporations like Intel that are dividing their branches to optimize corporate structure. Notably, Kellogg Co, Johnson & Johnson, and General Electric have also made similar spin-offs recently.
- CEO John Chen commented that this restructure would enhance the agility and focus of both industries in addressing the evolving market demands. Post-announcement, BlackBerry's U.S. shares surged by over 4%. Earlier this year, BlackBerry had hinted at potential strategic shifts, including possible business separations.
- The firm exited the smartphone market last year, looking to offload its mobile device patents. Once known for its business smartphones in the 2000s, BlackBerry reported a decline in revenue to $132 million in its recent quarterly update, with IoT and cybersecurity earnings at $49 million and $79 million.
