U.S. Middle East Strikes:
- Between 1:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on February 6, Houthi militants, supported by Iran, launched six anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen towards the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Three of these missiles targeted the MV Star Nasia, a bulk carrier flagged by the Marshall Islands and operated by Greece, as it passed through the Gulf of Aden. The first missile caused minor damage to the MV Star Nasia around 3:20 a.m. without injuring anyone.
- A second missile hit the water near the vessel at 2 p.m., causing no damage, and a third was intercepted by the USS Laboon near the ship at 4:30 p.m. Despite these attacks, the MV Star Nasia continued on its route without significant harm. The other three missiles aimed at the MV Morning Tide, a Barbados-flagged, UK-owned cargo ship in the Southern Red Sea, fell into the water near the ship but did not cause any damage or injuries. The MV Morning Tide also proceeded on its journey without incident.
- In a separate event on February 7 at 9:30 p.m. Baghdad Time, U.S. Central Command carried out a targeted strike in Iraq, eliminating a senior leader from Kata’ib Hezbollah. This action was a response to the group's attacks against U.S. service members, and the targeted individual was implicated in planning and executing these attacks. The strike reportedly did not result in any civilian casualties or collateral damage. The United States emphasized its commitment to protecting its personnel and stated it would respond decisively to any threats against its forces' safety.
Verizon Data Leak:
- Verizon, a major U.S. telecom company, recently reported a data breach affecting 63,206 people due to an employee's unauthorized access to personal data. This incident, revealed in a notification to Maine authorities on September 21, 2023, involved unauthorized access to a file with employee personal details such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, gender, union membership, birth dates, and salary information.
- Despite the breach, Verizon states there's no evidence the data was misused or distributed beyond the company. They are taking steps to strengthen security measures to prevent future incidents and have informed the necessary regulatory bodies. The breach has been described as an accidental exposure caused by internal misconduct.
- Verizon is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to those impacted, with coverage up to $1 million for potential fraud for two years. The company advises all affected individuals to monitor their credit reports and account statements vigilantly. Verizon, which employed over 117,000 people in 2022 and serves over 144.8 million subscribers, is continuing its internal investigation into the breach.
