Environment & Weather:
- On August 25, 2025, intense flash flooding struck along Highway 86 near Desert Elmore Ranch by the Salton Sea in California, USA, stranding multiple drivers as swift-moving water turned the roadway into a river and submerged vehicles amid heavy rainfall from severe thunderstorms in Imperial County. The flooding led to the closure of State Route 86 in both directions between Allen Road and State Route 78 due to debris and hazardous conditions, disrupting travel in the Coachella Valley region and prompting rescues for affected motorists.

- Local authorities issued flash flood warnings through the National Weather Service, advising residents to avoid low-lying areas, with the event contributing to broader weather impacts under a regional flood watch, though no casualties were immediately reported as response teams worked to clear the area and restore access.

History:
- The United States Coast Guard traces its origins to August 4, 1790, when Congress authorized the construction of ten revenue cutters to enforce customs laws under the newly formed Department of the Treasury. Originally known as the Revenue Marine and later the Revenue Cutter Service, it was the only armed maritime service in the early republic, acting as a customs enforcement body, anti-smuggling force, and maritime law enforcer. Over time, it played an increasingly crucial role in lifesaving, icebreaking, and supporting naval operations during wartime. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to formally become the U.S. Coast Guard, consolidating their roles in maritime rescue and law enforcement.
- Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the Coast Guard expanded its responsibilities significantly. It played key roles in both World Wars, conducted Cold War maritime security operations, and was involved in major environmental and disaster responses, such as the Exxon Valdez spill and Hurricane Katrina. After the 9/11 attacks, the Coast Guard was transferred from the Department of Transportation to the newly established Department of Homeland Security in 2003, reinforcing its national security mandate. Today, it stands as a unique military branch with both peacetime law enforcement and wartime defense roles, safeguarding U.S. interests across ports, waterways, and coasts.
