Micro Plastics Study:
- A recent study published in the journal Toxicological Sciences has revealed the presence of microplastics in every sample of human and dog testes examined by researchers. Microplastics, defined as plastics smaller than five millimeters, were found consistently across all samples, highlighting their pervasive nature. The study also noted that dogs with higher levels of plastic contamination in their testes had lower sperm counts.
- Although the research did not perform similar sperm count analyses on human samples, this finding raises concerns about potential impacts on human reproductive health, particularly in light of suggestions that microplastics could contribute to declining sperm counts in men. The full implications of microplastics on health are still not well understood, making this an important area for further research.
Blue Origin Launch:
- After nearly a two-year pause in crewed flights, Blue Origin has resumed crewed operations with the successful completion of its NS-25 mission (this past Sunday). This mission carried six tourists to the edge of space, marking a significant milestone for several passengers, including Ed Dwight, an artist and former Air Force Captain who was slated to be the first Black astronaut candidate in 1961 but never went to space until now.
- Alongside Dwight were Ken Hess, a software engineer and entrepreneur; Carol Schaller, a retired accountant; Sylvain Chiron, the founder of Brasserie Mont Blanc brewery; Gopi Thotakura, an aviator; and Mason Angel, a venture capitalist from Industrious Ventures. The New Shepard rocket, belonging to Blue Origin (founded by Jeff Bezos), had been grounded following an aborted mission in August 2022 due to an anomaly during the NS-22 mission.
- After working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration, Blue Origin implemented 21 corrective measures and returned to flight with an unmanned mission in December 2023. This mission (NS-22) successfully carried 33 cargo payloads into space, marking the company’s return to operational status. NS-25, representing the 25th flight of the New Shepard rocket and its seventh crewed mission, successfully returned to Earth, bringing the total number of passengers flown by Blue Origin to 37.
