Santander Data Breach:

The U.S. subsidiary of Spain-based bank Santander is notifying over 12,000 employees that their personal information was compromised in a third-party data breach. The incident was discovered on May 10 and involved a database used by a third-party affiliate from late April to early May 2024. In a notification letter sent to the affected employees, Santander Holdings USA explained that hackers accessed records containing employee names, Social Security numbers, and bank account information used for payroll.
Upon learning of the breach, Santander immediately took steps to secure their systems, including blocking access to the compromised database. The bank also continues to implement additional measures to prevent future breaches. According to the notification submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, the breach affected 12,786 employees. This breach is linked to a larger data incident that Santander's global operations disclosed in mid-May. This larger breach was part of a widespread attack on inadequately protected Snowflake customer accounts.
During this attack, hackers accessed a database hosted by a third-party provider, compromising the personal information of customers in Spain, Chile, and Uruguay, as well as all current and former employees. The attackers, identified as part of a financially motivated group known as UNC5537, used credentials stolen through malware to access accounts that did not have multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled. Security firm Mandiant revealed last week that this campaign compromised the accounts of 165 organizations.
