  • Yesterday, January 7, 2025, Meta announced that it is replacing its third-party fact-checking system with a new feature called “Community Notes.” This system, similar to X (formerly Twitter), allows users to collaborate by adding context to posts rather than relying on professional fact-checkers. Alongside this change, Meta is simplifying its content moderation to focus on addressing major violations only while also relocating its moderation teams to Texas to reduce political bias from California.

  • This move underscores Meta’s effort to compete with X in the free speech space. By introducing Community Notes, Meta is positioning itself as a strong competitor to X in fostering open discussion. This shift also intensifies the social media rivalry between the two giants, as both platforms work to roll out innovative features to retain and gain more users.

  • Yesterday, a wildfire erupted in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, California. The fire quickly spread across over 1,200 acres due to strong Santa Ana winds, with gusts reaching up to 100 mph. Over 30,000 residents were forced to evacuate, and more than 13,000 structures are currently threatened. Firefighters, aided by helicopters and other equipment, are working to contain the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.

  • The extreme winds have created dangerous conditions, causing road closures, including the Pacific Coast Highway. Schools in nearby areas were also closed as a precaution. On the same day, the Eaton Fire broke out in the Eaton Canyon area near Altadena, California. Within 30 minutes, it rapidly grew from 10 to 200 acres due to strong Santa Ana winds. Evacuations were ordered for Altadena, Kinneloa Mesa, Sierra Madre, and parts of Pasadena. In addition to the Eaton Fire and the larger Palisades Fire, other fires were reported across Southern California.
