Australia's defense forces have enacted an alcohol prohibition for soldiers during military operations and exercises.
This move comes after a 2020 report of an Australian military unit unlawfully killing 39 Afghan civilians between 2005 and 2013. The report partly attributed these actions to an unchecked drinking culture, citing it as a manifestation of "poor moral leadership" and disciplinary laxity.
As per updated regulations, combat soldiers will be prohibited from consuming alcohol during missions and will be subject to random breathalyzer tests. Non-combat soldiers, on the other hand, will only be permitted to drink on holidays.
