Economics & Markets:
October 23, 2026 — In France, S&P Global’s October survey showed private-sector activity shrinking again: its composite measure fell to 48.4 from 51.1 in September, with readings below 50 meaning activity is falling. Slower French activity also held back growth across the euro area.
October 23, 2026 — The United Kingdom’s National Audit Office said HM Revenue and Customs was owed £43.8 billion in tax at the end of 2025–26, and estimated 46% may not be collected. The debt share has fallen for three years, but older unpaid bills are harder to recover.

Business:
October 23, 2026 — JSW Steel and Japan’s JFE Steel approved a ₹7,500 crore equity plan to add 5 million tonnes a year at their Sambalpur, India, steel plant; work needs approvals before its planned April 2027 start and would take about 3.5 years.
Politics & Society:
October 23, 2026 — A gunman fired from a vehicle in Trappes and La Verrière, France, killing one person and wounding five. Police arrested the suspect, and France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor opened a suspected racist-terrorism case; three wounded people faced life-threatening injuries.
October 23, 2026 — Tunisian police used tear gas in Ettadhamen and Jebiniana, Tunisia, after protests over two recent deaths; people blocked roads and burned tyres. Families blamed police, while reports gave a different account of one detainee’s death.
October 23, 2026 — Leire Díez, a former Socialist Party member, asked a court to order Spain’s opposition People’s Party to remove an AI-made campaign ad using her likeness. No ruling was reported, leaving the dispute active before Spain’s November 29 election.
Environment & Weather:
October 22, 2026 — The UN Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, a climate-disaster fund, provisionally set aside $21.6 million for Nepal after the August Bhote Koshi floods; Nepal must still submit a funding request before the money is released.
October 23, 2026 — Telangana’s government in India started drought-response planning after a preliminary assessment identified 358 mandals, or local administrative areas, as at risk; it released emergency funds to district officials and will finalize declarations by October 31.
Cyber:
October 23, 2026 — Ukraine’s Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi called on government agencies in Kyiv, Ukraine, to form cybersecurity teams after he said Russian strikes damaged 10 data centers in the capital last month. The damage disrupted some internet services, while Ukraine says AI-assisted hacking attempts against state systems and businesses are rising.
October 23, 2026 — Japan said it will create a team to test systems with AI-led mock attacks after critical flaws in PHP, web-server software, triggered emergency patching. In Japan, SoftBank stopped mobile disaster alerts during maintenance, while Nomura, Mitsubishi UFJ, ANA and JR East temporarily limited some online services.
Science & Technology:
October 23, 2026 — The Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale and the University of Antwerp vaccinated the first participant in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in a Phase 2/3 Ebola vaccine trial. It will test vaccines in high-risk contacts against Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved vaccine.
October 23, 2026 — India’s Rural Development Ministry launched an upgraded attendance app for the VB-G RAM G rural jobs program nationwide. For more than 36.5 million workers, it checks that a real person is on camera and holds suspect wage lists for review; offline and disability exceptions remain.
Space:
October 22, 2026 — The United States accused Russia at the United Nations in New York City, United States, of moving Cosmos 2612 dangerously close to ICEYE-X36, a radar-imaging satellite operated by ICEYE US. The satellites came within about 500 meters; Russia said its activity was peaceful, and Cosmos 2612 later moved away without an attack.
Trends:
Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia pushed Brent crude to a more than five-month high, showing how security fears can raise fuel costs before a supply loss is confirmed. DTEK’s damaged thermal plant in Ukraine stopped generating power, while a cargo ship sank off Romania. Tumaini’s first dose in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, starts vaccine testing, not an approved protection.
What to watch: Watch whether Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia disrupt actual oil shipments or production; prices can fall if the risk eases. Watch DTEK’s repairs in Ukraine and rescues off Romania. Watch Tumaini enrolment and results: it cannot show vaccine protection yet.
Statistic of the Day:
Working natural gas held underground in the Lower 48 states of the United States totaled 3,644 billion cubic feet for the week ending October 16, 2026.
Working gas is the part of stored natural gas that can be withdrawn for use. The total rose by 77 billion cubic feet from the previous week and was within the range seen over the previous five years.
History of Messenger RNA: from cell messenger to medical tool:
Messenger RNA, or mRNA, carries protein-making instructions inside cells. Decades of work turned this fragile molecule from a laboratory clue into a way to train the immune system, first against infections and now in personalized cancer treatments that are still being tested.
1961: 1961 — Sydney Brenner, François Jacob and Matthew Meselson showed that short-lived mRNA carries instructions from DNA to ribosomes, the cell structures that build proteins. That explained how genetic information could be put to work.
1978: 1978 — Researchers delivered mRNA into cells inside liposomes, tiny fat-based bubbles. The carrier protected the fragile molecule long enough for cells to make its protein, addressing a major delivery problem.
1990: 1990 — Jon Wolff and colleagues injected laboratory-made mRNA into mouse muscle and showed that the animals’ cells made the encoded proteins. It established that mRNA could work inside a living body.
2005: 2005 — Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman showed that changing mRNA building blocks reduced unwanted inflammatory reactions and increased protein production. Their work made repeated, practical medical use of mRNA more achievable.
2021: 2021 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Comirnaty, an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. The platform is now also being tested in personalized cancer treatments that use genetic clues from an individual patient’s tumor.
