History of Vanguard
- Vanguard grew out of one of the biggest setbacks of John C. Bogle’s career. Bogle entered the investment industry at Wellington Management in 1951 after studying mutual funds at Princeton. He eventually became the company’s president, but a poorly timed merger led to internal conflict and Bogle was fired from management in 1974. He remained connected to Wellington’s mutual funds and created The Vanguard Group on May 1, 1975. The name came from HMS Vanguard, Admiral Horatio Nelson’s flagship. Bogle designed Vanguard differently from traditional Wall Street firms: the funds themselves would effectively own Vanguard, meaning the company would operate for its fund shareholders rather than outside private owners. His central belief was that most investors could outperform the average actively managed investor over time simply by owning the broad market and minimizing fees, trading, and unnecessary complexity.
- That philosophy produced Vanguard’s defining breakthrough. In 1976, it launched the First Index Investment Trust, designed to track the S&P 500 rather than pay managers to select individual stocks. The initial offering attracted only about $11 million, far below its roughly $150 million target, and critics called it “Bogle’s Folly.” It later became the Vanguard 500 Index Fund and helped transform global investing. Vanguard expanded into bond funds, money-market funds, retirement accounts, international funds, and eventually ETFs, while repeatedly lowering expenses as its scale increased. The company also helped popularize the simple three-fund portfolio concept: broad U.S. stocks, international stocks, and bonds. As retirement investing shifted from traditional pensions toward 401(k)s and individual retirement accounts, Vanguard became one of the primary destinations for long-term retirement savings. Bogle stepped down as CEO in 1996 but remained an influential advocate for low-cost investing until his death in 2019.
- Today, Vanguard is one of the world’s largest asset managers, overseeing more than $10 trillion for tens of millions of investors. Its largest products include the Vanguard Total Stock Market, Vanguard 500, Total International Stock, and Total Bond Market families, while ETFs such as VOO, VTI, VXUS, and BND have become core holdings for millions of investors. Vanguard is commonly compared with BlackRock and State Street, which together dominate the index-fund and ETF industry. The important distinction is that Vanguard generally manages money on behalf of investors—it does not personally own all the companies represented by those assets. Because its funds collectively hold enormous positions in companies such as Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon, JPMorgan, and thousands of others, Vanguard nevertheless has significant shareholder voting responsibility across corporate America. Its progression is essentially 1951 Bogle joins Wellington → 1974 Bogle loses his management position → 1975 Vanguard founded → 1976 index-fund experiment → retirement and mutual-fund expansion → ETF revolution → more than $10 trillion managed today. Vanguard’s biggest contribution was ultimately a simple idea: instead of constantly trying to find the next winning stock, ordinary investors could buy nearly the entire market cheaply, diversify broadly, hold for decades, and allow long-term economic growth and compounding to do most of the work.
