August 13, 2026 — Today, DeepSeek launched V4-Pro, its new advanced AI model built for coding, reasoning, and AI agents that can handle complex tasks with less human input. It can automatically use more or less computing power depending on the difficulty of a task, works with OpenAI-compatible developer tools, and is now available through DeepSeek’s app, website, and API.

August 12, 2026 — SpaceXAI released Grok 4.6, its newest frontier AI model built to handle longer, more complex tasks across coding, research, analysis, and AI agent workflows with less human intervention.

It significantly improves on Grok 4.5 while keeping the same starting API price of $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, and is now available through Grok Build, Cursor, the SpaceXAI API, and other platforms.

History of Anthropic:

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees led by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, alongside Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, Sam McCandlish, and Chris Olah. Dario Amodei had joined OpenAI in 2016, eventually becoming VP of Research and working on the scaling of increasingly powerful language models. Daniela became an OpenAI executive focused on operations and organizational growth. The group left OpenAI around 2020–2021 as disagreements developed over how increasingly powerful AI should be built, governed, funded, and made safe. They created Anthropic as a Public Benefit Corporation, with the goal of simultaneously advancing frontier AI and researching how to make increasingly capable systems controllable and understandable. Early Anthropic research focused heavily on AI alignment, scaling laws, interpretability, and Constitutional AI—a training approach introduced in 2022 that gives an AI a written set of principles it can use to critique and improve its own responses. Anthropic then released Claude in March 2023, followed by Claude 2 in July 2023, the Claude 3 family in March 2024, and increasingly powerful generations of Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus models. Claude quickly became known for coding, writing, long-context analysis, research, and enterprise work, putting Anthropic into direct competition with OpenAI and ChatGPT.
Anthropic then expanded from building chatbots toward building AI agents capable of completing real work. It launched its API, enterprise products, computer-use capabilities, and Claude Code, allowing Claude to inspect software projects, write and modify code, run development workflows, and operate for increasingly long periods. Anthropic also built enormous computing partnerships with Amazon and Google, while Claude became available through major cloud platforms. By 2025–2026, the competition had moved beyond basic chat toward models capable of reasoning, programming, using computers, conducting research, maintaining memory, and working autonomously for hours or days. Anthropic’s newest generation represents that shift. Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 were announced on June 9, 2026 and returned to availability on July 1, 2026 after a temporary suspension. Fable 5 is Anthropic’s extremely powerful general-use model for advanced coding, research, vision, professional work, and long-running agent tasks. Mythos 5 represents an even higher capability tier intended for frontier research and tightly controlled applications. The two share the same underlying model, but Fable applies additional safeguards to make the technology suitable for broader use; sensitive requests can be routed to other Claude models. Anthropic reports that Mythos-class systems can sustain extremely complex research for days, including scientific and software-engineering tasks that earlier Claude generations could not reliably complete. This progression shows Claude evolving from chat assistant → reasoning model → coding agent → computer-using agent → long-running autonomous research system.
Today, Anthropic is one of OpenAI’s strongest direct competitors, alongside Google DeepMind and other frontier laboratories. Its strategy differs somewhat from OpenAI’s: ChatGPT became an enormous consumer AI platform, while Anthropic built particularly strong positions in enterprise AI, software development, research, long-context reasoning, and autonomous agents. Anthropic’s rise has also been extraordinarily fast: founded in 2021 → Claude launched in 2023 → Claude 3 in 2024 → advanced agent and coding systems in 2025 → Fable 5 and Mythos 5 in 2026. Amazon and Google became major strategic investors and infrastructure partners, giving Anthropic access to enormous amounts of specialized AI computing capacity. The company’s long-term goal extends beyond making a better chatbot: it is attempting to build increasingly general AI systems capable of performing substantial intellectual work while simultaneously developing methods to understand and control those systems. That makes the modern AI race much larger than ChatGPT versus Claude. OpenAI and Anthropic are increasingly competing to build platforms capable of coding software, conducting research, operating computers, analyzing massive datasets, coordinating tools, and eventually performing increasingly large portions of digital knowledge work autonomously.
