November 6, 2026 — Galactic Energy, a Chinese rocket company, launched its Ceres-2 rocket from Jiuquan, China, placing four satellites into a 535-kilometer Sun-synchronous orbit. It was the rocket’s first successful mission after its January test-flight failure.
November 6, 2026 — The European Space Agency’s Hera spacecraft returned its first close-up images of the Didymos asteroid system during its final approach. The pictures begin the mission’s study of the 2022 DART impact, which changed the orbit of Didymos’s smaller companion, Dimorphos.
November 6, 2026 — Europe’s weather-satellite agency EUMETSAT released the first images from its MTG-I2 satellite. The satellite will provide pictures of Europe every 2.5 minutes after it enters service, helping forecasters follow fast-changing storms.
Trends:
Taiwan authorized a NT$500 billion fund and short-selling limits after its stock index fell 12.19% in a week, showing officials trying to slow a market shock. France will take over air defence around Rzeszów, Poland, in January, continuing protection for Ukraine-aid deliveries. Nvidia’s funding for Taiwan chip packaging shows production limits are shifting investment beyond chip design.
What to watch: • Watch whether Taiwan’s measures slow selling when the rules start Monday; they cannot guarantee prices. Watch whether France’s handover at Rzeszów, Poland, proceeds on January 1 and how long it lasts. Watch whether Nvidia’s Taiwan packaging expansion delivers capacity on schedule; the stated gains are planned, not yet completed.
Statistic of the Day:
Typical petrol prices in the United Kingdom rose by 6.4 pence per litre in October 2026 compared with September 2026.
This measures the change in typical petrol prices at filling stations. It does not measure household electricity or heating bills.
History of How asteroid deflection moved from idea to test:
Asteroid deflection became a tested idea through the Didymos–Dimorphos missions. Astronomers first identified a nearby asteroid pair, NASA struck its smaller member in 2022, and Europe’s Hera spacecraft is studying the result. The work tests a possible future response; neither asteroid threatens Earth.
April 11, 1996: Joe Montani of the University of Arizona’s Spacewatch survey spotted Didymos. Repeated observations were needed to map its orbit, turning a faint moving object into a known near-Earth asteroid.
2003: Petr Pravec at the Ondřejov Observatory found a repeating change in Didymos’s brightness. It showed that a smaller body orbited it, creating a pair whose motion could later be measured from Earth.
June 23, 2017: NASA approved DART, its first mission to test a kinetic impactor: a spacecraft that hits an asteroid to change its motion. Didymos’s small moon offered a measurable target without posing an Earth-impact threat.
November 24, 2021–September 26, 2022: NASA launched DART from California, United States, in November 2021. On September 26, 2022, its autonomous guidance struck Dimorphos, showing a spacecraft could reach and hit the smaller member of an asteroid pair.
October 11, 2022–2026: Telescopes found that DART shortened Dimorphos’s orbit around Didymos by about 33 minutes. ESA launched Hera in 2024 to inspect the impact’s effects closely, helping turn one successful test into a better-understood method for future planetary-defence planning.
